4_Types_of_Mature_Moves_3In my psychology studies over the years, I have read multiple scientific research articles stating that the vast majority of us intend to live independently and in our own homes (current home) until we die.

“Personally, if I had a dollar for every person who told me in my 20+ years in real estate that they weren’t moving (unless being carried out in a pine box), I would be rich.

Unfortunately, this is the third client segment we serve and the reality of it is this — we have historically helped on average over 50 of these mature sellers each year. It is by far, my favorite client — not necessarily my favorite type of move. Despite our best efforts to make it easier, it is usually an emotional move for everyone involved.”

As health declines to the point where more support is needed than can be provided in their home, the move becomes necessary. Family members or senior living communities are often the ones who call us first, with most clients being a combination of frail elders and their adult children or spouses.

Helping this group of clients involves selling the personal residence and helping them move into a senior living community, the home of a family member, or a skilled care facility. Sometimes the client has already moved and we are entrusted with only the sale of the home, but many times we manage the entire estate liquidation process for out of town family members or trusted advisors.

I said this before, but it’s worth saying again, of the 4 types — these clients are my favorites. Being able to educate, empower, and equip someone who needs both professional expertise and empathy (vs. sympathy) during one of the most significant life events they will experience is an honor above all honors.

We are not just real estate agents doing yet another transaction, we serve as Legacy Coaches, surrogate children, substitute siblings, and trusted advisors. It is what we are all called to be and yet many never get the opportunity — we welcome these opportunities and embrace them all (she says with tears streaming down her face).
